Integrating
Technology in the Classroom: Advantages
Department
of Mathematics, Purdue University
Today's
technology can provide teachers and students with opportunities
for
teaching and learning that were impossible in the past. Computers can be
used
as
devices for communicating with people literally a world apart. They can
be used
as
tools to create instructional materials or as presentation devices to provide
information
in ways never before possible. "Many successful users of
technology-based
materials say that students find strong motivation in the feeling
that
they are in control of their own learning" (Arone & Grabowski,
1991; Relan,
1992)
as cited in Robyler, Edwards, & Havriluk, 1997.
Current
learning theories suggest that people need to construct their own
knowledge
(Newby, Stepich, Lehman, & Russell, 2000; Driscoll, 1994; Wilson,
1996).
Technology provides learning opportunities that support a highly interactive
environment.
This type of environment emphasizes reflection and discussion with
peers
which aid in the construction of knowledge (Rodriguez, 1996; Valde, Bower,
&
Thomas, 1996). "Significant and mounting evidence shows that technology
improves
students' mastery of basic skills, test scores, writing, and engagement
in
school"
(Dwyer, 1996, p. 24). The use of technology may also help address the
cognitive,
social, and motivational needs of "at-risk" students (Kozma & Croninger,
1992).
Computer technology also helps teachers address the issue of different
learning
styles by providing different types of software to enhance different learning
environments.

Additional Resources
"When does technology help students develop complex skills-learning that goes beyond mere rote memorization-such as the ability to write well or to engage in mathematical problem solving? Recent research points to several key factors. Technology makes a difference when the teacher has a clear vision of what students are to learn and how technology can help. Success also requires that the teacher include in his or her instructional plan ways to give students guidance in the processes and thinking strategies that make up the skill. Finally, the teacher needs to be actively involved in a variety of roles-sometimes a lecturer, sometimes a coach; one day a consultant, the next day an editor."
Five
Things Faculty Can Do to Integrate Technology Into the Classroom
The
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
What
are the five things a teacher (any teacher) must DO
to
implement instructional technology in the classroom?
1.Develop lesson plans that incorporate technology. (For example: Illustrate lectures and presentations with images, list internet sites in reference materials, use technology in classroom presentations and discussions.) 2.Teach students to use technology to help complete tasks. (For example: Suggest that students use spell checking, internet references in papers, charts and graphs in papers, reports, and presentations.)
3.Require all students to use technology to help complete tasks on a regular basis. (For example: Ask students to keep an electronic daily journal, ask students to use the internet to search for information, allow students to use e-mail for
information gathering.)4.Include the use of technology in the grading system. (For example: Use electronic gradebooks, spreadsheets, etc.)
5.Continue to change as newer technology becomes available. (Access the internet on at least a weekly basis, check out your class enrollments from the computer, put course notes on web page for students to access, use computer for presentation and lecture, illustrate data collection on site with use of computers and technology, etc.)
What
are the five things a teacher (any teacher) must KNOW
to
implement instructional technology in the classroom?
1.The importance and advantages of educational technology.
2.That the available technology is reliable and that technical support
is available on short notice.
3.How the available technology relates to the curriculum.
4.How to use the technology that the students will be using.
5.How to structure class time so that some students are using technology
while
others are doing something else, assuming access to technology is limited.
